Milei and his alliance with Flávio Bolsonaro are shaping the presidential campaign in Brazil

The Buenos Aires Herald reviewed the Brazilian electoral landscape ahead of the October 4 election, which pits President Lula da Silva against Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of the former president who was sentenced to prison. The newspaper reported that Javier Milei maintains close ties with the Brazilian right-wing candidate, whose economic team cites Argentina’s reforms as a model to follow, and that the Argentine president was present when Bolsonaro launched his campaign in São Paulo in July.

That incident led to a diplomatic crisis, as Milei used offensive language to describe Lula—without naming him—prompting Brazil to recall its ambassador to Buenos Aires. Political scientist Oliver Stuenkel, interviewed by the publication, analyzed how bilateral relations might evolve depending on the election results: “If Flávio wins, there will be an ideological honeymoon, although bilateral challenges will persist,” he noted, adding that a victory for Lula would mean a cooler, strictly commercial relationship between the two countries.
