Milei campaigned for Bolsonaro in Brazil, and Lula ended up winning

Lula da Silva’s victory in Brazil broke a streak of seven presidential wins by right-wing candidates in Latin America over the past 18 months—a trend that, according to 20minutos, had begun with Javier Milei’s victory in Argentina in 2023. The publication also argues that the election outcome represents a setback for the Argentine president, who was actively involved in the defeated candidate’s campaign: he attended the launch of his candidacy and questioned the transparency of the election.
The newspaper identifies the governments of Mexico and Uruguay, along with Brazil’s, as those remaining on the opposite side of the continent’s conservative shift and alignment with Washington. It also notes that several right-wing leaders who had supported the Brazilian candidate have already congratulated Lula and said they will maintain bilateral relations.
