College students occupy the Department of Education and demand funding

A group of college students entered the Palacio Sarmiento, the headquarters of the Ministry of Education, and are remaining in the lobby, waiting to be received by Secretary Carlos Torrendell. They told EFE that they will not leave until that happens.
The incident is the latest chapter in the conflict between public universities and Javier Milei’s administration over funding for the sector. The 2026 university budget amounts to just 0.428 percent of GDP—the lowest level in more than three decades, according to Ciicti. In 2024 and 2025, Congress passed laws to increase funding, but the president vetoed them; a court ruling declared the most recent veto unconstitutional. Student Isabel González described the situation this way: “We don’t know what else to do; we’re desperate; we haven’t received any answers.”
