Milei outlined his economic plan in Paris: lower spending, deregulation, and trade liberalization

On October 2 in Paris, Javier Milei received an award for being the world’s most influential economist and used his speech to outline his platform: lowering taxes, eliminating regulations, and opening up the economy. An opinion column published in Observador argued that he gave “a master class on economic growth” and contrasted his approach with that of Portugal, where, according to the author, spending and permanent subsidies have entrenched poverty rather than reducing it.

The article reviews the data Milei presented: a balanced budget from the first month of his term, achieved through spending cuts and without raising taxes; inflation of 1.7% in August; trade and budget surpluses; and a poverty rate, as measured by INDEC, that fell from 52.9% to 32.3%. It also acknowledges that inflation remains near 30% annually and that poverty has risen again in the last six months.
