Milei Backtracks and Maintains Restrictions on Foreign Purchases of Farmland

The ruling party bloc in Argentina’s Chamber of Deputies succeeded in getting the chamber to take up, in the coming days, a bill that reaffirms the existing restrictions on foreign ownership of rural land, which were established in a 2011 regulation that the executive branch had repealed by decree.
The move aims to preempt Thursday’s session, during which opposition blocs will attempt to overturn that 2023 decree, which, in addition to the land issue, covers dozens of provisions on foreign trade, rents, and other activities. Javier Milei’s administration thus abandoned its plan to expand access for foreign buyers in order to safeguard the rest of the regulations, El Comercio reported. The Senate had already rejected that decree in March 2024, and the Supreme Court upheld its validity in September.
