The IAPA issued a warning regarding an Argentine bill that would impose prison sentences for the spread of misinformation

In Formosa, members of a La Nación+ crew who were filming interviews were sentenced to four days in jail, which could be commuted to a fine. That incident, along with the government’s “Defense of National Sovereignty” bill—which provides for prison time for anyone who, with foreign backing, attempts to rig an election or manipulate the will of the people—is part of the report that the IAPA approved at its assembly in Bogotá. The organization considers that the wording describing these conduct is too broad and could intimidate media outlets and journalists, an objection it adopted from ADEPA.
The document also notes Luis Caputo’s request for the judiciary to take action against a news story he deemed false and the need for a law to punish such cases, a position supported by Javier Milei. It also tallies the presidential attacks: 335 reposts and 26 original posts against the press in just seven days in August, in addition to 16 journalists and nine media outlets named.
