Tension with Chile Over the Malvinas Islands: Quirno Calls for Respect for the Agreement Signed by Milei and Kast

The Chilean newspaper La Tercera reported that Javier Milei’s foreign minister, Pablo Quirno, turned his attention to Chile following a business roundtable held in Punta Arenas with the participation of local business leaders and suppliers linked to the oil companies behind the Sea Lion project, in the basin north of the archipelago. Quirno ruled out a diplomatic rift but noted that Buenos Aires will closely monitor the matter and reiterated the commitment made in September by Milei and José Antonio Kast: there will be no logistical support from Chilean territory for the exploitation of natural resources on the islands.

According to the report, the foreign minister also downplayed the remarks made by Chilean Defense Minister Fernando Barros, who had questioned Argentina’s restrictions on maritime traffic. “The president’s word trumps the minister’s word,” Quirno replied.
