Argentina Launches an Investment-Based Citizenship Program to Attract Dollars

milei.news

Javier Milei’s government presented a plan in Paris to grant Argentine citizenship to foreigners who make financial contributions to the country. Economy Minister Luis Caputo explained that interested parties may choose between a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 to the Treasury or an investment of $800,000 in a seven-year government bond, with higher amounts available for families.

According to the AP, the goal behind the initiative is to bolster access to foreign currency ahead of Argentina’s debt maturities in 2027—totaling nearly $25 billion—at a time when the country has postponed its return to international markets. Caputo highlighted the value of the Argentine passport due to the number of visa-free destinations it allows. The report also noted that such programs, known as “golden passports,” have been criticized in other countries for facilitating the entry of individuals with criminal records or ties to money laundering, although the Argentine government assured that it will implement controls on the origin of funds and the backgrounds of applicants.
