Uruguayan political scientists compare Bolsonaro's and Milei's stances on U.S. military bases

An analysis published by the Uruguayan news outlet *La Diaria*, in which the publication spoke with social scientists Diego Hernández Nilson, Camilo López Burian, and Micaela Gorriti about the Brazilian elections, included comparisons with Javier Milei’s foreign policy. According to Hernández Nilson, although a Bolsonaro victory would strengthen the region’s alignment with the United States, the Brazilian candidate would not replicate measures such as those taken by the Argentine government to cede territory in Tierra del Fuego for the establishment of U.S. military bases. The scholar argued that Bolsonaro maintains a more sovereignist stance on geopolitical and military issues than Milei, whom he indirectly described as more willing to make concessions to Washington: “Not quite as submissive, to put it colloquially.”
The expert also noted that Bolsonaro, unlike Milei, would not align with the U.S. agenda in the region because his support base includes rural interests linked to trade with China. López Burian, for his part, argued that a Bolsonaro victory would consolidate an alliance with Argentina characterized by a subordinate alignment with Donald Trump’s policies.
