University protests in Argentina: demands for funding and an opposition attempt to repeal the emergency decree

A new university protest is marching toward Congress in Buenos Aires this Thursday, with similar demonstrations in Rosario, Córdoba, and Santa Fe. The main demand is that the government comply with the law passed in 2025 to fund public universities—a law that Congress ratified after an executive veto and whose implementation is currently being debated in court. The protesters have added other demands: salary adjustments for faculty and non-faculty staff, updated scholarship amounts, and funding for institutional operations and research.
The protest comes after the courts ordered the executive branch to adjust salaries in the sector and release scholarship funds. At the same time, opposition blocs are attempting to secure a quorum to repeal DNU 70/2023, a central piece of legislation under the Milei administration. On Wednesday, the executive branch also backtracked on its plan to relax the rules governing land purchases by foreigners—one of the most controversial provisions of that decree.
