University students march in Argentina to demand that Milei enforce the funding law

Faculty, students, and officials from public universities took to the streets this Thursday in Argentina to demand that Javier Milei’s government implement the university funding law. The protest was centered in Plaza del Congreso in Buenos Aires and was replicated in other cities. The National Interuniversity Council is also demanding salary adjustments, increased scholarship funds, and funding for operations and research.

The conflict stems from presidential vetoes of two bills passed by Congress—one in 2024 and the other in 2025—and the executive branch’s decision not to implement them. In October, a federal court ordered compliance with the law, but the government appealed. According to the Ciicti, the university budget fell from 0.718% of GDP in 2023 to 0.541% this year, and the 2027 budget proposal would reduce it further.
