Georgieva Expects Argentina to Repay the IMF Sooner

The Brazilian website The Rio Times reported that Kristalina Georgieva, managing director of the IMF, said in Bangkok that Argentina will pay its debt to the organization just as Greece did. The statement was made during a panel discussion at the annual meetings with Economy Minister Luis Caputo. Caputo responded that the country is already on that path, although the Argentine media disagree on exactly what he meant.

Argentina owes the IMF some $56.8 billion, about one-third of the organization’s total lending. According to The Rio Times, Georgieva’s remarks do not imply a formal change in the payment schedule, as the third review of the 2025 program is still pending.
