The United Kingdom Responds to Milei on the Malvinas Islands and Asserts Its Ability to Defend Them

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting responded to Javier Milei's claims regarding the Malvinas Islands, stating that the United Kingdom has the full capacity to defend the archipelago if Argentina were to attempt an invasion. In an interview with The Sun on Sunday, he described Argentina’s position as baseless propaganda and asserted that Argentina lacks the military means to take the islands by force.
The dispute was reignited after Milei intensified his sovereignty claim and labeled British oil development in the area—known as the Sea Lion project—as illegal. The Argentine president raised the issue before the UN General Assembly and warned that the country could act on its own if the organization does not intervene. Milei also pushed for sanctions against companies linked to the oil project and announced funding to reinforce a naval base in Tierra del Fuego, amid doubts raised by Donald Trump regarding U.S. military support for Britain in the event of a new conflict.
