Milei gave the United Kingdom a two-week deadline regarding oil in the Malvinas Islands

The Argentine president announced on the social media platform X that he had ordered the Foreign Ministry and its legal teams to initiate international arbitration against the United Kingdom over hydrocarbon exploitation in the basin north of the islands. According to the specialized website OilPrice.com, which cited a BBC report, Milei set a two-week deadline: if London does not halt the activity, the case would go to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. “THE Malvinas Islands ARE ARGENTINE, and they are defended with actions, not words,” the president wrote.
The field in question, Sea Lion, is operated by a British subsidiary of the Israeli company Navitas Petroleum in partnership with Rockhopper Exploration. The companies have already approved the final investment, anticipate the first barrel in March 2028, and expect more than three decades of production. Both maintain that they hold valid licenses granted by the British government and see no reason to alter their plans.
