Milei Gives the United Kingdom Two Weeks to Halt Oil Exploration in the Malvinas Islands

Argentine President Javier Milei threatened to take international legal action against the United Kingdom if the Sea Lion oil project—located near the Malvinas Islands and developed by British and Israeli companies—is not halted. On social media, he set a two-week deadline for the project to be abandoned, warning that otherwise he would take the matter to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, based in Hamburg.

The companies involved, Rockhopper Exploration and Navitas Petroleum, maintain that they hold valid licenses granted by the islands’ authorities to extract the estimated 1.7 billion barrels of crude oil in the field. The dispute adds to the existing tensions between the two countries over sovereignty of the archipelago, after Milei harshly criticized the UN for its inaction on the issue during his speech at the General Assembly, and after British Defense Minister Wes Streeting said that Argentina lacks the military capacity to retake the islands by force.
