Chilean lawmakers call on their Foreign Ministry to support the maritime route to the Malvinas Islands

La Tercera reported that two lawmakers from the Chilean Republican Party responded to the Argentine government’s warnings regarding trade ties between Punta Arenas and the Malvinas Islands. Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno had pointed out that there are signed agreements between the two countries and noted that Javier Milei’s administration expects those treaties to be respected.
According to the Chilean media outlet, Alejandro Riquelme, the congressman representing Magallanes, announced that he will ask the Foreign Ministry for a statement and support for the proposed maritime route, with the first voyage scheduled for November. Riquelme maintained that Milei seeks to curb Chilean trade with the archipelago and cited the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the treaties of 1881 and 1984. His colleague Álvaro Carter, who chairs the Defense Committee, stated that “Argentina cannot lay claim to something to which Chile has every right.”
