Argentine business leaders are waiting for signs of stability as economic activity slows

During the IDEA Colloquium in Mar del Plata, executives and economists agreed that stability remains the top priority for the Argentine business community after decades of runaway inflation. The Buenos Aires Herald noted that, although Javier Milei’s administration managed to bring down inflation, that achievement came at a heavy economic cost: economic activity fell 2.9% month-over-month in July, and J.P. Morgan forecasts a contraction in the third quarter, while loan delinquencies are hitting multi-year highs.

Milei himself, in an interview from Paris on the first day of the conference, acknowledged the climate of caution among investors ahead of the elections. “The option to wait has value,” the president said, according to the newspaper. On the sidelines of the conference, several business leaders and economists expressed doubts not only about the results but also about the approach: one of them described the monetary policy framework as too rigid, while others lamented the lack of clear signs of economic recovery. The Herald concluded that, for now, the only thing stable in Argentina is instability.
