The United States will establish a regional anti-narcotics unit in Argentina

Argentine Security Minister Alejandra Monteoliva announced that the United States will create a regional unit based in Argentina to combat drug trafficking and organized crime, under the auspices of the State Department’s Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. The Trump administration approved $13.35 million in funding for the unit—ten times more than the current resources allocated for cooperation with Argentina.
Monteoliva said the initiative reflects the fact that Argentina and the United States are “strategic partners on security matters.” The announcement is part of the Javier Milei administration’s rapprochement with the Trump administration, with which it maintains a good relationship. The ministry did not specify which countries the unit will cover or what specific activities it will carry out, although it indicated that it will facilitate the provision of equipment and joint projects to strengthen operational capabilities against drug trafficking.
